The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home and it will probably be one of the busiest and often used. While the chef of the family may consider the kitchen their own personal domain, kitchens are also gathering spaces for family gatherings and evenings of entertaining. Whether you are working, eating or visiting, you will probably spend time in the kitchen in your own home or in the homes of others. This is why it is important for homeowners to keep their kitchens organized and clean. If you plan ahead and create a system, it will be easier and less time-consuming to do this. Start by storing edible items safely. The last thing you want is to waste items that spoil or to have to smell items that have gone bad. Food packaging and corrugated boxes help to keep things fresh. You can also put items into special storage containers that are intended to extend their shelf life.
Once things are fresh and covered, dig into your kitchen drawers. This is often one of the most disorganized parts of a kitchen because people think nobody looks in their drawers other than those using them. However, even if this is true, using disorganized drawers adds to stress and frustration when cooking. Everyone knows how annoying it is to reach into a drawer while cooking three of four items on the stove, only to see a giant mess and no whisk, spatula or stirring spoon. Use drawer organizers to divide items into categories and if you feel like there are no organizers that suit your needs, make your own.
After the drawers are organized, head to the pantry. This is another case where things are often left to fall apart because the door can be shut. In order to shop smart and know what ingredients you have on hand, organize your pantry. Determine what must be kept in the pantry and then figure out the best way to store it. Some things will stay fresh longer if they are in glass containers. Also be sure edible items are up off of the floor by at least six inches.
Getting rid of things and organizing is a great place to start kitchen organization, but the job does not end there. Once you have the minimum of items in the space and they are all organized, it is time to start cleaning. Start with the refrigerator and oven because cleaning solutions may need to sit for some time to penetrate the dirt and grime that has built up. If you have a self-cleaning oven, you will spend less time on this step, but not everyone enjoys this luxury. Clean up spills and stains that have built up and figure out methods for dealing with areas affected by common spills.
Finally, wipe down all of the surfaces in the space including the floors and countertops. Clean counters have a huge impact on the look of your kitchen. At the end of each night, put away the dinner dishes and wipe the counters to keep your kitchen in tip-top shape.
